Programs & Services

Since 2011, Micronesian Islanders Community of Oregon has worked diligently to offer a variety of initiatives designed to address community needs and promote sustainable growth.

Cultural Education

Our cultural programs celebrate and preserve Micronesian traditions through workshops, art events, and community gatherings, fostering pride and understanding within our community and beyond.

Social Services

Educational initiatives provide essential resources, mentoring, and scholarship opportunities to enhance academic success and literacy among Micronesian youth, promoting lifelong learning and personal growth.

Advocacy Programs

We provide social services that address health care access, housing assistance, and employment support, ensuring that Micronesian Islanders receive the resources they need for a better quality of life.

Community Networking

Advocacy efforts focus on raising awareness about the unique challenges faced by Micronesian communities, promoting equity and justice through outreach, partnerships, and engagement with local and state agencies.

Affordable Housing: Voyagers Village

Voyagers Village Apartments, a 41-unit, 4-story building with indoor and outdoor common areas, is planned for Commercial Street in Salem, Oregon. It features the first community space dedicated to the Micronesian Islander community in the continental US. Amenities will include: a community center, play structure, pig pit, barbecue, planter boxes, parking spaces and a covered, outdoor lanai (porch). Groundbreaking is set for Summer 2025.

Chronic Disease: Diabetes Prevention

We consult with our health partners to provide workshops and services for the community members who are at risk or willing to learn more about diabetes prevention. Currently, we are refining this program to cater specifically to Pacific Islanders and Micronesians.

Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention

This program started in 2019 and we have engaged the community to learn about domestic violence and sexual assault prevention. Our staff is trained to work with victims in our community and direct them to the proper resources.

Food and Culture Series

In partnership with Oregon Food Bank and affiliated partners, we offer Seed to Support and Cooking Matters to the community. We are also in the process of changing the curriculum to be culturally specific for our community.
We also have an ongoing “What’s Cooking in the Kitchen” series with staff member, Bella! We may be incorporating other guest cooking opportunities. Contact us if you want to share your culinary skills with us.

Health Insurance for COFA

From 2019-2021, MIC has been a grant funded community partner with the Oregon Department of Business and Consumer Services (DCBS) to provide support for Compact of Free Association (COFA) citizens who live in Oregon.
After the COFA Premium Assistance, MIC has been a recognized community partner with Oregon Health Authority (OHA). We have enrolled more than a thousand individuals into OHP Medicaid and associated programs. Many of these COFA citizens were transferred  from COFA Premium Assistance. The COFA language interpretation and translation services are also available.

Leadership Development

Developing community leadership skills and providing necessary resources for aspiring leaders are essential among the many services and programs we offer. Examples of correlating workshops include: Preparing Oral and Written Testimony, Public Speaking, Grant Writing, How to Run for Public Office, Fiscal Responsibilities, and Saving for a Home.

Cultural Appreciation Program

Since 2018, MIC has led a summer-based cultural program series for the Kapingamarangi community. In partnership with the elders and youth, a yearly program for the community members seeking to learn about the Kapingamarangi people, language, and culture has been offered to interested participants. MIC is in the the process of creating a summer program series for other Micronesian Islander communities.

Previously, MIC also engaged in other cultural celebration and awareness activities such as: MICC (Micronesian Islander Community Celebration), Taking Back the MPI from API Month, and Resource Fairs.
